How to run Java Applets:

Hello,
I have been a 2nd line IT desktop support engineer for 10 years, and now want to switch lanes and move into the programming world.
It's new to me and my Java/programming experience is pretty thin, but am desperate to learn!

I have downloaded Java netbeans which has given me a chance to write some code..
I'm covering the basics and i want to create some Java applets with HTML.

Problem:- I've got Java netbeans, but what else do I need, maybe javac?

How does it work together?
