what is best resource to find out how to generate Word templates?

I would like to be able to generate Word 2010 templates (.dotx) and push new styles into it based on data in an Excel file. I am having trouble finding good reference on how to generate a Word template, either from scratch or from existing .dotx file. The URLs I have found point to inserting data into Word but not to making a new Word template with new styles. Ideally, this would be easy enough that I can change the input file and create a new Word template from the command line.
I'm not a student doing homework, but I am a novice with coding and looking for best resources to learn about Word templates code.
